KOIN - Another Experminent to Come

This evening KOIN employees were told that their news director & station manager Dan Salamone resigned to "pursue other interests."

In his short time he gave Portland "news to the point".

When he arrived KOIN was in second place. Now, it will land in third in most of the newscasts it does with perhaps the lowest morale of any newsroom in Portland (save perhaps the folks at the Trib who are still cursing the upcoming move).

He was at KOIN for less than two years, which is about the average for news directors in this sized markets (24th largest in the country). What you are likely to see is some change in on-air personnel, two new unions for its employees (hoping for better treatment), a new look of graphics and perhaps a new set (it usually comes with a new boss). KOIN's news will likely be in limbo for a while as it is up for sale along with the others in the Emmis group. It is a perfect opportunity for KATU, which is poised to be the #2 news station in Portland.

What is hoped for internally (so I'm told) is someone who will use this as an opportunity to turn KOIN around and learn from this 18 month or so experiment.

Good luck KOIN.. hope you get a new leader and new owner that treats you guys well and gives KGW some competition. But for now, the reality is there's only one station in town giving the big 8 any trouble and it ain't KATU or KOIN.

What's an "expermiment?"

Dan Salamone moved on from KOIN-TV today after living two stories below the KOIN tower for 17 months.

During his short life at KOIN, Dan replaced 100% of the weather staff, both morning anchors, two primary evening anchors, a weekend anchor, several reporters, and the entire news management staff under him. He also made several changes to the on-air news look... including updating the set so that it looks like a sunny summer afternoon in Portland during every newscast. He introduced the blood red graphics to emphasize an increased committment to copying KPTV's crime coverage, but told employees never to watch KPTV (or KATU or KGW) because it would deter their focus from their own product. And speaking of that product, "News That's To The Point" was Dan's mantra - and Dan, as the promotion's manager, made sure that Jeff and Kelley frequently reminded viewers of their personal committment to be "To The Point" during every newscast, every day on KOIN News 6 (not to be confused with KOIN 6 News).

Dan leaves behind a newsroom divided between miserable KOIN veterans and second-guessing New Mexicans who never really knew what they were getting themselves into. At least Dan leaves knowing that his previously divided newsroom will shortly be united - as one union. And last, but certainly not least, Dan leaves KOIN-TV with the lowest dinner-hour ratings in the history of Portland TV news.

Dan Salamone.

I love it...but don't forget about the weather guy paid 2 years of salary to disappear just because he didn't fit in, that was a real effective use of Emmis cash! (Not me unfortunately)...now all you guys need is a good company to pick you up and fix all this mess and restore your reputation.

Does that cool theater-popcorn maker still work over there? That was real neat, quite a perk. It's not the same making it in the microwave now.

Ack! I hope Ed Whalen doesn't leave/get the boot. He's the only part about any local news I find worth watching (although I do watch whatsisname on KGW's sports sunday).

Crime does not interest me. so, I don't watch local news most of the time. What would I watch? The real drama in Portland is the reality of the Multnomah County Commissioners, the Portland City Commissioners and the State Legislature. I mean, what could be more entertaining, and MAYBE informative,!! than watching these folks go after each other. Let's put some faces and personalities on these people! PLEASE! I mean, there are guys in the legislature I just HATE and I don't even know what they look like.

And what I wouldn't give to see Serena Cruz just GOING OFF on someone. Give it to me!!!!!

Serena Cruz went ballistic on the sheriff this week, and that whole board of commissioners is at war with itself. Really nasty, and TV missed the whole thing. Only audio I heard was on KEX/K103. The Oregonian was all over it.

Official memo to KOIN:

Dan Salamone resigned today as Station Manager of KOIN-TV after being granted permission by Emmis Communications to pursue other career opportunities prior to the sale of the Television Station Division. We want to thank Dan for his dedication to the Company, both in Albuquerque and in Portland.

I'm curious - do you really think they will hire new talent? Any time soon? And - would you even venture there at this point in time, given what's going on? A job's a job, know what I'm sayin'?

Ed Whalen is completely senile and mumbles like he's got a mouth full of sandwich. A straight ticker roll of scores would be a million-percent improvement.

KOIN News 6 will never be #1 in the market until they offer free parking to ALL employees. Pumping some fresh air into the Cold War Era fallout shelter they call a newsroom probably wouldn't hurt either. No employee can make good decisions when they're sucking down Carbon Monoxide... and worrying a hobo may be making a cardboard nest underneath their SUV in an overpriced parking garage 20 blocks away.
It's just simple HR common sense.

Free parking? A help, for sure. But we've all worked in bunkers and fallout shelters and they've been award winning and #1 operations. It's what we do, not the room in which we do it. The mgt at KOIN has a massive task... rebuilt viewer trust and interest. I'm sure Mike remembers with vivid clarity how they dominated viewership in the 70's and how honesty, commitment, solid journalism and great photography kept people watching. That is what is sorely missing now, and that is what will take a long, long time to regain.

Here's something a bit off topic, but it involves KOIN.

I only have antenna reception, no cable or dish, and have a pretty big set of "rabbit ears" on my 27" TV. I have noticed the inconsistency of KOIN's reception much more than any other station (amazingly KWBP is the best signal). BTW, I live near Union Station.

I've also noticed that when sweeps come up, the reception improves dramatically. Obviously, I have come to believe that KOIN reduces power during non-ratings periods in order to save money. After all, juicing the antenna is a huge expense at a TV station.

Any KOIN engineers want to weigh in on this? Are you saving coin to save KOIN?

Hey, hands off Ed Whalen. The guy's entertaining, senile or not. That former sports guy who used to be on the 10 pm slot on fox was damn funny, too.

Entertaining? As in 'I would pay to watch/listen to this'? You're kidding, right? Insight, clarity and wit, please, then *maybe* entertainment. It's the *news* for pete's sake...

You;'d rather watch the guy on K2? Ron? The "hitting the mark from beyond the arc" guy? This sports analogy as tired as Dan Rather on election night.....

OK, that one was mine.
