Press Clubbed

In relating some of the thing I've heard (and helped by others, thank you very much), I was taken by the posting of Chris Frankonis, who's One True b!X is easily the most read blog among insiders in Portland's political world. He took a shot at a proposed "Press Club" mentioned on this site, and had this take on it:

Journalists, even if they are opinion journalists, are supposed to be reporting the news of the day in order to inform the public discourse. Public relations and advertising professionals, on the other hand, are trying only to advance the causes of their clients or employers, often to the point of distorting the public discourse.
What, exactly, is the rationale behind having a social club where they kick back and mingle with each other? Are we missing something here?

I know we're suffering through a crisis of confidence and credibility in our stock and trade, but I found his comment a little odd. Journalists are being spun all the time. Journalists know it. And that spin is kept out of pieces ALMOST ALL OF THE TIME (or used as information that is checked and double checked). Since most of the people in the PR trade, especially the good ones, used to be colleagues and remain friends, where is the harm of socializing?

From what I understand, this would be more of a restaurant than spin-zone - a place to blow off steam. I know you're not suggesting journalists be segregated, are you b!X? I know the guy working on this and I'm sure you'd get the invite to karaoke night!

When I saw that somebody was talking about a press club for local media types, I found the idea repellent, but I thought maybe it was just me. But as b!X has weighed in, I thought I'd say why.

Damage is done to the public discourse when newspeople spend most of their time among themselves. As attendance at any press conference will demonstrate, discussion is already tightly proscribed and yes, you are indeed being spun every time you are handled by organizers, PR types, politicians and others who dictate to you the story of the day. You enter a prepared environment, you set up your lights, you listen to a set of prepared remarks, you bark a few questions, you pack up and leave to go prepare the same story that all your competitors will have that evening.

Better to get out in the community you live in, talk to real people and find out what they care about. Pursue the stories that rise to the top. Quit chasing your tails.

And c'mon, you'd invite PR flacks to the club to socialize with them? Why not just invite them to write your scripts for you, too?

I was a member of the SF Press Club for years. I wouldn't waste a lot of energy waiting for this one to happen.

We don't have a large enough press pool to support the business.

People don't drink as much, and certainly not as publicly, as they used to.

The old press clubs were more like mini-MACs... pool, rooms, steam baths, etc.

The dues were prohibitive. Four figures in the late 70's.

The demos were ancient. We used to walk through the library on our way to lunch and place bets on which ancient wisp would be too dead to make it into the dining room by dinner.

But I do miss Vickie Jenkin's annual "Come As Your Favorite Dead Newsmaker" party each year. The ultimate media costume party!

Speaking of drinking, here's a great quote that might explain why a club might be a good thing but really explains why journalism sucks:

"We used to have the nervous energy from typewriters clacking away. There'd be so much smoke, you couldn't see the far wall. At the end of the day, we'd go to the bar and listen to stories. Now, you got computers, no one smokes and you go home to your families. I'm sure it's healthy and good for the family life, but it's hell on readers."

Truly, when I wrote for a metro daily ragt back in the 70s, we all hundg out at two or three local joints because the cops hung out there and the cops always attracted broads. That's how we got invited to undercover stakeouts and got "anonymous" calls in the middle of the night that some politician was caught in bed with a hooker that had OD'd. Of course there were competing papers and sometimes the competition escalated into a fistfight. You didn't actually insult the other guy's paper, your girlfriend did. I wish I was there now. We had the balls then to risk our jobs for something we thought was cool.

There's a difference, I think, between segregation and a healthy distance.

Then again, I seem to have an exceedingly rare discomfort with the twin revolving door between (1) the press and government and (2) the press and public relations.

You mileage may vary.

Let's face it: Without PR folks, much of the work we in the press do today would fall apart. With so many stories to chase, and fewer reporters to chase them, you have to be willing to listen to good ideas/leads/etc. from other quarters. PR folks have given me some very good story ideas in the past. Yes, they're paid to forward the agenda of their clients, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are untrustworthy. If you're doing your job right, you're going to check and recheck the info they give you, and you're going to call bullshit on them when they give you some. They know that, and you should, too. Just like it's in my best interest to maintain relationships with solid sources, it's in their best interest to maintain relationships with reporters.

So, a social club of some sort that included both? I don't see what's wrong with it. It would give me an opportunity to find out more about flacks and judge for myself which ones I would trust. That could potentially be valuable to me.

Here is a true story from a local daily paper (you'd recognize the name of it in a second)

A couple of years ago an editor on the city desk (it has a different name now) sent out a memo asking reporters to check with their government PR contacts to see what stories were out there to be pursued/reported. I got the memo (this isn't gossip), now wish I had saved it.

Later, during last year's gay marriage flap in Multnomah County, same editor wrote that some reporters thought the paper should not publish the views of people opposed to gay marriage as that would lend legitimacy to those views. Rather than suggest that those reporters might be in the wrong business, this editor instead characterized them as having an alternative viewpoint that should be considered along with other critieria for covering the issue.

So my point is we often don't need PR people to spin us. We're more than willing to spin readers ourselves.

Wednesday, June 15, 2005 11:33:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

what ticks me off is that at every paper I've worked for, editors have let their own bias determine what is "news"...whether it was legitimate news or not. How is that worse than PR people?

Is a journalist still a journalist when he takes a job flacking at Legacy?

Yup.

My friends at KXL make no mistake about it -- they tell me right to my face they are PROPAGANDISTS -- pure and simple -- and yes, they know the definition of the word.

It's war, they say.

Alan DeWitt is right.

The news media is broken. The discussions here shouldn't be about who's doing a good job and which PR person we think is terrific. It should be about what's wrong and how can we fix it?

Newspaper readership is down and continuing to decline and while I don't pay much attention to local TV news (all hat, no cattle, in my experience), I suspect they, like the networks, are fighting over pieces of a smaller pie.

Why? I suspect it is because readers/viewers realize they're not getting a lot of the news that is out there, just glib reporting and writing and a lot of slick packaging. But bullshit in a nicer box is still gonna smell.

And the problem at the other end is that editors/managers are in such deep denial about the above. They seem to think journalism has never been better (thanks to their leadership, no doubt) and they can't figure out why the public is turning away from them in ever-increasing numbers.

It's really pretty simple. It's about quality. It's about finding and reporting news, not coming up with story ideas and trolling about for selective data to support them. It's about telling the whole truth, not leaving things out because they conflict with the story's basic thrust; run contrary to the reporter's and/or editor's personal agenda and world viewpoint; lessen the story's "impact"; or extol/embarrass a particular political or ethnic group as a whole.

And, finally (since I'm starting to bore myself), it's about reporters and editors putting down their telephones and getting out into the community and learning about people and issues first-hand instead of staying in their comfort zone and talking among themselves as they rely on market studies, focus groups and "media relations" folks to create a distorted perception of what's going on and what people care about.

Does anybody do any of this any more? Doesn't seem like it.

The press club excludes TV and radio people. Guess we're not journalists. I knew print reporters were snobby, but that's ridiculous.

And the press club will be a meeting... not a place. Many large markets have press clubs that own buildings.

I used to work in Philadelphia where the Pen & Pencil was perennially going bust save for its faithful patrons who would come through and keep it going. Dues were cheap, the food was good and the place was the best dive bar in the city.

The bartender there knew what a nutgraph was and where to find the best jazz by local musicians in Philly.

The clientele was half journalists -- print, TV, radio, whatever -- and half restauranteurs, their workers and friends who came over for a drink after their place closed up shop.

But beyond that, the place hosted occasional off-the-record sessions with mayors, gubernatorial candidates, cops, wonks -- anybody vaguely important -- who would come in sans flacks so we could grill them after they gave a spiel.

It was worthwhile and noticeably missing from other places I've worked. Wouldn't mind at all having one here or helping get it started.

LOL! Now that's a truly funny line! As I learned long ago, "journalists" aren't about to let a few mundane facts get in the way of a good story.

Talk to that Welsh guy who runs a column in the big O: Nicholas? Oh, well, we can conveniently forget that he was found plagiarizing material. Just an honest mistake, I'm sure.

Oh, but he's so left-wing that you just knew there would be no significant repercussions.

Oh, sure. You keep the "spin" out. Yesser. Psst! Wanna buy a bridge?

I'm mystified how you could fail to understand b!x's comment. If there were a "politicians club" where legislators "blew off steam" with lobbyists, regardless of whether any "spin" actually occurred, the press would be all over it. The claims of undue influence would be relentless.

Your credibility wanes because you think one is a story, but the other is simply a chance to socialize.

Cheap food until at least 2:30 a.m.

A gentlemen's agreement, enforceable by flogging, that what's said on the premises stays on the premises. Even if I mumble something that sounds like an opinion. The most miserable part of trying to be a journalist and have a life is this business of having to maintain the facade of objectivity even when drunk.

And frankly, I think flaks and newsmakers don't belong in a setting like that. Although maybe those ordinary people and beat cops that Anonymous up there thought we should get to know would fit in fine.
