Kudos to the O

Great to see Mike Donahue's story gets an above the banner headline in this morning's Oregonian, and a front page living section play.

If they decided to do the story from reading this site, I'm extremely happy.

If they got it off the buzz on the street or in the biz, that's cool too.

Again, if we can help get Mike's story out (and now that it's in the O, it will) and his hope to get the message to other men, fantastic.

--And again, kudos to KOIN's interim management for playing it straight - "to the point."

I don't get all the hoopla about Mike Donohue's cancer. He's paid to deliver a product to me, just like the mailman or the pizza boy. It's more than time that local TV news people keep their personal lives to themselves - I don't care about Tracy Barry adopting another orphan or Mike Donohue's prostate. Give me the news and leave your personal lives at home.

whoa, and a happy misanthropic saturday to you guys, too. prostate cancer isn't confined to mr. donahue, and public reminders of symptoms, the importance of examinations and treatment are always in order, no matter what the immediate news hook. think of what the impact might be if one of the anchors came in one day and told her story of domestic abuse -- buried in an O story on the mult. co. sheriff's intervention in the domestic troubles of a couple with whom he was acquainted: mult. co. gets 10,000 domestic abuse complaints a year. this is just a statistic until it comes alive somehow, and tv is a great vehicle for that.

I am all for increasing the public awareness of medical issues such as prostate cancer, etc. The timing seems a bit odd to me, though... is Mike Donohue's condition the reason this made the news? Why not earlier? What about other medical issues that don't affect anchors?

Anon commenters 1 and 2, why be so negative? Lighten up! I think most readers will agree with comment no. 3.

I think you watch the news on TV or read it in the newspaper at all you would know that one of the most heavily covered topic by all news media is the medical field.
Stories are covered on an almost daily basis and if you haven't bothered to watch or read them, that's a pitty.

Yes, the medical field is heavily covered in the media. But so much of that coverage seems to consist of stand alone reports on the scientific study of the day. It is usually an out-of-context snippet and these studies sometimes contradict each other as well. As for medical issues being "the most heavily covered topic by all news media,"...it doesn't seem that way to me. The bulk of the news is that holy trifecta... Crime, Weather, and Sports. Oh, my!

I agree with #2. Who cares what the traffic guy did over the weekend? Who cares if the weather guy went skiing yesterday? Who cares if an anchor is pregnant? It's a waste of valuable time during a news program. If I wanted to hear a coffeeklatch, I'd turn on "The View".

Medical stories can be more than adequately covered without tying it to a "beloved" anchorman.

It's important for on-air people to come across as real people. By letting the personalities shine, even if it takes a few seconds on-air time, the TV medium can separate itself from other media sources (magazines, newspapers, and internet sites). One of the greatest advantages TV has over the other sources is the ability to "connect" with viewers via the on-air people.

That's why I see no issue at all with Donahue sharing his plight. He's a human being... and sharing his illness helps connect him to the audience. And from that connection comes care, concern, and eventually loyalty.

I probably wouldn't have paid attention to just another medical story about prostate cancer. They are usualy filled with a bunch of doctor-speak. Mike Donahue's stories had me watching because it was him. He covered the story in layman's terms as a patient, not as a reporter.

The statistics on cancer including cancer prostate treatment are quite frightening. I liked the information in your blog that also included for cancer prostate treatment. One day everyone will be able to win the fight agaianst cancer but I fear that it will not be in my lifetime.
