The NEW Trib

No biz section - in the paper and on the web site.

Jill Spitznass has a piece today about being single - must have been her last - she usually publishes Tuesday. Or my inside information could be wrong.

No mention of any former staffers - haven't seen the hard copy yet - has the masthead changed?

I really thought Stanford would mention it - since he doesn't seem to be worried about his job.

No mention of any Biz Section, Editors or Writers on the masthead on pg. A7.

Spitznass is not listed on Masthead either.

Her columns are written 2 weeks in advance. They just took what she had already completed (presumably last week) and ran both columns!!

This was on the Trib website.

Beginning with this edition of the Portland Tribune, coverage of business news will appear within the general pages of the Tribune A section — and no longer on special pages titled Business Tribune.
“Coverage of business news and providing news and feature stories on interesting developments within the Portland-area economy are very important,” said Tribune President Steve Clark.
“In keeping with our mission of not just reporting a story, but helping to tell how Portland and its residents are affected by business news, business stories will be the shared responsibility of reporters Jim Redden, Todd Murphy and Ben Jacklet.”
Clark said that Dwight Jaynes, executive editor of the Tribune, also could be contacted about business news or feature story ideas.
“News and features about Portland business and the economy have a big impact,” Clark said.
“They can touch each resident of Portland. We look forward to bringing these stories to life in even more relevant and interesting ways.”

I read the masthead as well. I was amused to see that Russ Martineau is the advertising director. I don't mean to say he can't do the job, it's just that... well.. when he worked for Willamette Week some years ago, he and I were at lunch. I was buying space from him at the time. At some point before the entree - he announces, quite loudly and with all seriousness, "Of course you know I hunt for Bigfoot!" You should ask him about it sometime - he was quite an active bigfoot hunter.

Maybe if he finds him, Mr. Foot will buy some ads.

While we're talking Trib, can we please have a hand for Dwight Jaynes? How long did it take him to write today's column? My money is on 10 minutes or less. In his usual riveting prose, he informs us that:

Poker is not a sport. (Presumably because Dwight is, in theory, physically capable of doing it.)
Cycling is not a sport.
Soccer is not a sport.
High school baseball isn't real baseball because they don't play nine innings.
The drive to Seattle, surely one of the most straightforward automotive journeys in America, is "terrible".

How is it that this guy isn't under EPA investigation for the wrongful murder of trees?

Guess PDX Media Insider was right- Stanford is the only columnist left.

Curiously, JS was still on the masthead on the website this a.m., but P.S. was not.

JS was not on the masthead in the hard copy (nor, obviously, was PS). But her final pieces were published. Way to add insult to injury.

Whether you think she is an airhead or not, you gotta have a little heart- her last column bemoans the fact of her being single, she's laid off, and I heard a rumor she is being sued. Sounds like a summer of discontent.

This week gave me an idea for a book: Famous Last Columns, a look at the ironic, tragic, but still humorous new meanings in the final offerings of fired columnists. The work must be written in a state of employment but published just before or shortly after the presentation of the cardboard box. For example, my final regular column was about the nutria, a rodent that is half-rat, half-beaver. Pete Schulberg went out with a discussion of the new horse channel. But still there is no match for Jill Spitznass who left us with one final point for the ages: She couldn’t get laid in Mexico. She also dropped one of the classic lines for someone about to be canned: “who better to adore me than me?” Farewell, good luck, and thanks for the big finish.

Dwight not only doesn't know what is a sport, he doesn't even know what news is. He is the main reason the paper is going down the drain. They need a news person to lead, not a blowhard.

It seems the Trib has become the KPTV of the print world.

Every edition they have cops or criminals on the cover.

I hope the Trib is successful. The WW and the Oregonian need as much competition as possible.

Here's what I don't understand. Whatever happened to the idea that you ought to carve out a niche, a point of differentiation - and then run with it?

The O's business coverage is anemic at best - and it's not something that the weeklies really care to touch, save for the occasional feature story. Sure, there's the Business Journal (people don't seem to say boo about it here, though - wonder why?)

I liked the Trib's business section, though - and thought the 'sources say' column was a decent addition.

So does it really make sense to lay off the business staff, yet retain the living/lifestyle folks when everybody else in the world is doing restaurant reviews, for example?

I know why it might make sense from a business standpoint - after all, you want to be able to suck up to those potential advertisers. But from an editorial standpoint, in an already fragmented market? It makes little sense to me...

Very true, Betsy. The O's biz page is little more than wire stories most of the time, and as good as some of the Business Journal stuff is, it's audience is much narrower than some of the other rags in town. At least with the Trib, people would pick it up for any number of reasons and have some business stories to look at. And a lot of times, the biz writers were covering the stories that were headlines anyway. Now the paper's left with just a handful of staff news reporters to do it all.

I've commented further over on the original 7/20 posting, but can anybody shed any light as to why Robert Pamplin (or Steve Clark) ever believed that Dwight Jaynes was capable of running this show?

Or (he says, even more incredulous) why said individuals can continue to employ him, given the state of the paper today???

I'm with Activist Kaza: Having made a terrible personnel decision in the beginning by making Jaynes his newspaper czar, how is it that Pamplin continues to trust the guy? How deep was their pre-Trib relationship? Many millions have been spent at this point, after all...

People should not dys Dr. Pamplin about cutting expenses at the Trib. The truth is he has spent millions of his own money to get this going, and it has never come even close to paying for itself.

The original expectation was that it would cover its own expenses within 3 years, and he would recover his initial investment after 5 years. So what other media orgainization would continue a venture knowing that it will loose money--None except him.

Dr Pamplin's only mistake with the Tribune is his choice in the Company's Leadership. The Tribune's financial problems were caused from stupid personnel decisions made before the paper launched, and it sealed its own fate, by hiring no experienced management, except the then publisher.

The launching management team were all hired as previous worker-bees with very few having some mid-level management experience becuase that was all the paper could afford. The Trib wanted to go against the O's Management team, so they bought what they could afford- the O's employees and put them in management positions, or promoted lessor publications mid-level managers.

Remember that everyone who took the job at the Trib was lured away with fat 25% pay raise from an already established employer becuase they were taking chances on a new publication-when so few new publications never see their first brithday, much less a 3rd.

But the most fatal of all their bad personnel choices have been the Tribs choices in Sales Managers. The first was had no education, little newspaper experience and a lotta good talk, she did make a good effort and at least understood how to sell against the O. The Trib made an equally stupid mistake in #2, by choosing someone who did not understand the newspaper industry at all, and had a proven history of failure at KPAM.

It is a pitty that these people lost thier jobs but this was the best paying job they've ever had. But I think the biggest pitty is for Dr Pamplin, who is still paying for a newspaper that has yet to return anything except a large tax write off.

Pamplin made the same mistake at KPAM. He put Bill Gallagher in charge. Classic example of rising one tragic notch above one's ability.

Dr. Bob made the same fundamental mistake with both KPAM and The Tribune: trying to insert a product where no hole in the market exists. Any radio researcher in town could tell you there was no need for another AM news/talker; likewise--from the circulation and advertising standpoint--there was insufficient demand, from the outset, for another newspaper. Pamplin and his supporters can say all they want about the superiority of their products--with some justification--but from a cold business standpoint, both radio and newspaper ventures were doomed from the get-go. Ego and ambition do not equal success.

KPAM's original goal was fine. However too little time elapsed before management was seduced by a gd consultant. Things went south from there.
Sure there has been some growth since then, but not enough. Then Bob Miller hands Clear Channel a big gift by jumping from 4949 to 888. Do a comparison of Linnman and Miller and tell me what YOU think. Paul should have been doing morning radio years ago.

Jaynes is also a master of self-preservation. Doesn't care at all about the welfare of his workers, but will apparently say or do anything to protect his own big salary. As to whether he's doing anything right, well, just look at the paper.

Great blog on business college earn extra income own. I've stumbled on a superb money making website. Linkreferral is free to join and drives traffic to your website in an inivitive way (the more sites you visit, the more links you get back to your website.)

I've only been a member of Linkreferral for aproximately 2 weeks but I have already seen the volume of people coming to my site double - if not treble.

Linkreferral is not only driving visitors to my website but as a result my affiliate sales income has doubled also.

I really cannot push this website enough. It is free and it is fantastic!! www.linkreferral.com is a must for money making opportunities online.

Yesterday, while I was at work, my cousin stole my iphone and tested to see if it can survive a forty foot drop, just so she
can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now destroyed and she has
83 views. I know this is completely off topic but I had to share it with someone!

Here is my blog ... "redd"

I was suggested this blog by means of my cousin. I'm now not positive whether or not this post is written by him as no one else realize such specific about my trouble. You're incredible!

Thanks!
