One Up-ing Classy

Last week, Mike Donahue told colleagues his doctors caught cancer of his prostate in the early stages. Tonight, he told viewers about it, as he will at 6 and 11 the next two days.

This is not a man saying "woe is me." This is a man who wants other men to understand the importance of early detection and treatment. He knows men don't go see doctors about this because of ego or fear. He hopes his reports might get guys to take this seriously.

Sadly, these reports are on the lowest rated TV newscast in the market. This is not a time of competition, but a time to educate. For those of us in the business, we should encourage people to watch KOIN the next few days, even though it's against our nature to do so. Or we should encourage our bosses to do similar stories and mention Mike - because everyone knows, likes and respects him. Other markets have done this when an icon has faced a tough medical challenge.

Let's offer our prayers and good wishes for a postive outcome for Mike, and hope his reports make a difference.

Class act.

Mike blew me away with the nonchalant manner in which he announced it. In his unvaryingly pleasant delivery, he said, "(x)number of men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. I myself got that news recently, and over the next few nights," etc. Did it nice and straight, the usual Mike, not much different than a routine story about people getting soaked at Salmon Street Springs. All the while, I'm thinking, this is your life, man!

I don't know Mike Donohue, but feel like I have for a long time. Good wishes.

This disease is often very treatable when detected early...but even in some of those cases where its caught, the outcome is not good. KPAM's Bob Chase was a victim of prostate cancer. He was diagnosed early...had what everyone assumed was successful surgery...but died less than a year after his diagnosis. I echo the sentiment of offering our prayers and good wishes for a postive outcome for Mike.

Mike is one of the most classy people I've known or worked with. I didn't know it was possible, but I have even more respect for him since learning of his desire to help others through his experience. Best wishes - you are in my prayers!

Mike is a class act all the way. Gianola could learn a few things from him. By the way- heard it from Dr. Dean Adell- if a man lives to be 80 there is a 100% chance he will develop prostate cancer.

Haven't been around Mike since high school but it sounds like he hasn't changed - one of the good guys. We'll keep him in our prayers.

Mike Donahue is showing his class by using this unfortunate incident to help others. Judging from his report on Thursday night, his cancer is at the mid-level, so there is hope for a complete recovery. I have been watching these reports for three reasons.

I'm a man that wants this information. God forbid I'll need it in the future.

Mike Donahue is delivering the information in a very personal way by using first hand accounts and not in medical jargon.

I respect Mike Donahue more than just about any TV newsman in Portland TV history, outside of possibly Richard Ross.

Without question, Mike Donahue is a class act, and it is amazing that he is using his own medical issues to warn other men of this important condition.

It is also fortunate that KOIN is covering this, with their good taste. Another station might have a "Prostate Watch" and a "Cancer Team".

Kudos to both Mike and KOIN for their class act. I wish Mike the best.

Throughout his career at KOIN,Mike Donahue has been an example of grace under fire. He's an icon, yet the whims of different management at KOIN have, at various times, put his talents on the back burner. The great thing is he always rises to the top. You have to admire the way he is reporting on what has to be a frightening experience. He has achieved the difficult balance of objectivity and reporter involvement. And, we're learning something important. Way to go, Mike. They can't keep you down, and neither will this latest challenge.

There are many so called alternative therapies for cancer de mama many of which I dont think actually do anything unless they are able to control the mind as well which has huge healing potential. I think most issues relating to cancer de mama can be accommofdated to some degree with these altenative therapies but I would not let it be my only treatement in the fight against cancer.
