Update at KOIN

Anchors and reporters narrowly defeated a vote to unionize. 10 votes for, 11 votes against.

Last month, photographers, editors and technicians voted to join a union.

Prepare for a sudden and mysterious increase in poorly lit closeups on KOIN.

To bad it wasn't 12 no votes then we could call them the dirty dozen. Things are bound to get very ugly in that reporting shop... enjoy the split shifts and shortend weekends.

Well, AFTRA is about the most worthless excuse for a union. At KXL, Jeff Grimes used to fire someone every six months just to let everyone know who was boss. Did AFTRA do anything about it? Nope, not a thing.

Even if that vote goes through, but with a small margin, that's like a no vote. You need a pretty solid win to show people are behind the union. Makes sitting down at the table to negotiate a lot easier.
That said, the anchors-who likely led the no movement, could have stepped up and been heroes as soon as it was announced that AFTRA wanted to represent onair poeple. Go in, find out what those reporters are angry about and go to bat for them. You diffuse the situation and at the same time earn a lot of respect from your co-workers. Obviously that didn't happen.

Got news for ya big guy. The minute you say you want a union vote that stops all negotiations with the station. Anchors never had a chance to go to bat for the reporters. The reporters called for a vote and tried to force it down the anchors throats thinking they had the votes to pass it. The anchors even petioned the AFTRA to let them out so the reporters could get their union w/o forcing anchors who neither wanted or needed the union. But AFTRA said no. Why? Money! If the reporters had told AFTRA to let the anchors out there would be a reporters union at KOIN today. Greed killed AFTRA at KOIN. End o' story.

I'd like to see the vote sorted by annual salary, bonus, and contract agreements.

You're right. Greed did kill the union... but not AFTRA greed. It came down to the greedy anchors who didn't want to $upport the overworked reporters.

Anchors at KOIN? Aren't there only 2 or 3? The rest of the "anchors" report more than they anchor. KOIN has a smaller anchor-group than all other stations in town, including KPTV, which has far fewer shows. You can't assign blame to KOIN "anchors" for rejecting the reunion... there just aren't enough of them to be a majority.

Ding, dong the witch is dead, and those who pushed for the union will be the first to go. Emmis knows who voted for what and will pass that on to the new owner. Hope it was worth it.
