Watch This Space

Today's post will grow - we're learning more about the new KOIN "Chief" Meteorologist (did he too get his degree from Mississippi State?) and the changes coming to Channel 6, the new technology coming to KATU and other things.

But first...

I got gigged, correctly, the other day for my grammar use, so I'll pass on a HUGE error in today's O - passed on by a friendly poster.

The number two editorial refers to City Hall reporter Anna Griffith's story about how Portland's Park Bureau was going to charge non-profits for using parks.

OOOPS - Her name is Anna Griffin. Wonder who's getting chewed out this morning at the weekly editorial confab???

I think I can top the Anna Griffin screw-up. I wrote over 150 columns for the Portland Tribune, but I should have known the paper was less than thrilled. There was a little biographical blurb at the end and one week they misspelled my name in my own column. Ouch.

This site really shows why the news media has failed the public over the last few years. Do they recruite journalist from spelling bees and grammer classes. Who the hell cares. How about you post the question; are today's journalist the right people for the job? Are schools training the wrong people the wrong way? YOur industry is dangerously close to failing and all you can talk about is name errors, new meterologist and show design changes. Sad what has happen to US media.

"Sad what has happened to the US media."
From someone who obviously knows little to nothing about the media.
This is a forum to talk among ourselves about ourselves. We do not need unqualified opinions from outsiders.

Actually, it's come one, come all. It's important that those on the inside hear how we're seen. We can all stand a little learning.
I get to set the rules and so far, those rules seem to be working.

Is Anonymous 9:23 a satire or a copy-editor test?

"Who the hell cares."
"are today's journalist the right people"
"Are schools training the wrong people the wrong way?"
"YOur industry is dangerously close to failing and all you can talk about is name errors, new meterologist and show design changes."

Hilarious stuff, whoever you are! Keep it coming!

One of the highlights of my career came when Tom Hallman made the common mistake of spelling my name as "Lisa" in a quote.

The next day, The Oregonian actually ran a correction (!!!) stating that "the name of Lise Harwin, a spokeswoman for Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center, was misspelled."

To this day, I am stumped by who clued them in... It sounds like something my mom would do, but I don't think she's that savvy. Besides, it's funnier to think that someone who's not even family took the time bring this to their attention.

So who is the new weatherperson? I heard that someone from Seattle was offered the job but it was too little money and too long of a contract.
KOIN definitely has some serious weather issues (including 5-7 year old equipment & graphics). I don't think any local "chiefs" would go there unless they made a big commitment to upgrading that equipment and giving weather a higher priority. Good people that seem to try hard, but no support from management. Remember the "funnel cloud" incident in May?

Enjoy the laugh. Do you not understand your profession is a complete joke? When a show based on mocking you has better rating then all cable news networks your really in serious trouble. Dead men walking and you don't even know it. Your going to laugh all the way into irrelavance.

I hope your coffee didn't spill on your next story. I'd hate to miss your indepth report on dog maulings. Its a relief to know your story will spell mastiff correctly. How could we live without editors pretending to be journalists.

I wish all of you "anonymous" types would at least come up with a unique nickname and use it each time you post! It's hard to keep track of certain personalities here. Or, is that the whole idea with some of you who make wacky comments?

RE: name errors...

At least people remembered you (even if your names were spelled wrong).

I had been working at a station for about 6 years (mostly overnight) when I had to go to one of those "smooze the GM" events. I roamed around the room and eventually strolled over to a person I hadn't seen in a while. They looked at me and said, "You still work here?"
