Whose BLOG Is It Anyway?

In the past week, I had to delete a few comments, which prompted this smart question:

Could PDXMediawatcher please explain his criteria for removing a post??

It got me to thinking about what this site has become. It has become (at least in my newsroom) something folks take time to find every day. We know people tangentally connected with the news biz read it (and comment), as do lots of outsiders with viewpoints and comments that seem to make no sense at all (and drive the discussion way away from the point I had originally hoped might make some impact on management).

It's clear PDX Media Insider has little impact on the coverage of news, or the management of news coverage. I wish it did, but my ego remains in tact. As far as "our" issues, I see my self more as a gatherer of ideas and comments, not the final gatekeeper. And I know some discussion does get to the meeting table. (And that some managers have appeared threatened or at least defensive when some comments get to the heart of what we'd like to see some outlets quit doing).

That said, I have deleted a few posts because I thought they were mean spirited, off point, crass, but, most important to me, I didn't think they belonged on MY blog. I haven't done it every time (for those keeping track), so I'll admit to some inconsistency. I don't want the blog to denegrate into what I've been reading on the PDX Radio site. To tell the truth, I also don't have time to police everything - just the obvious stuff.

Jack Bogdanski, who writes the enormously popular Jack Bog's Blog is taking a comment hiatus. That is, he's writing, but not allowing folks to post. As he said, " tell the truth, I'm mostly tired of reading and brooding about certain readers' comments."

I understand.

I'm not there yet.

I'm glad to hear that you're taking the time to keep this thing civil. A beloved site to me has completely deteriorated in the past few years because the 1st amendment approach has trumped focus and meaning.

I'm working on a comments policy, which I'm hoping will take care of some of the problems. But removing some comments and banning some people are necessary evils.

Glad to see you're still at this, Mike. 8c)

Let me take a moment to thank you, PDXmediawatcher, for your dedication to this site. It's a great source of information, outlet, and fun rumors for many of us in each newsroom. It would sadden me to see the site disappear.

Don't feel pressured to set rules or criteria for comments. It is 100% your blog. You owe none of us any explanation for what you sensor. If you don't like a comment for whatever reason, you have every right to delete it. As you said earlier, it's your party.

In short, you are censoring comments with less thought and consistency than any "Letters to the Editor" section of a newspaper.
You didn't "have" to censor anything. You chose to, either to protect your friends or to mute the voices of those you disagree with. Apparently we are only supposed to be mad at the things you're mad at.

Generally speaking, the comments have been the most interesting and informative part of this blog... often the topic/text itself seems strained and slapdash -- as if you were stuck for a topic. I stopped checking the site daily a couple weeks ago, when it seemed it was on its last topical legs. "Your" blog would lose 90% of its readers without comments.

But it's your blog, so if you insist on arbitrary censorship --- then it will become a pathetic example of journalistic masturbation.

This does get toward one difference between blogging and the mainstream media: Write/report for a mainstream publication, and you have to sign your name to your work and accept the fact that people will snark at it and have their snark printed/read aloud by your outlet. In the blog world, you can be anonymous, print what you want and squelch the sort of response that makes you uncomfortable. Clearly certain people abuse the freedom of 'comment' areas on blogs. But that's the price of publishing in a public venue.

Anonymous Anonymous said...

uh no. If the webmaster's intent is to keep things reasonably civil and "fact-based" then deleting posts that aren't either is perfectly fine. foul and false posts are NOT the price of publishing in a public venue. personally, I would have deleted more of the half-baked, bitter and tangential posts than mediawatcher has. if that somehow lowers the value of the site for you, then vaya con dios. you can find all the muck you want elsewhere. but the best sites happen to have better arguments -- not more emotional, more intelligent.

Thank you for creating this blog and I couldn't agree more with the idea of removing what you consider to be off-topic or personal attack comments. While frank give and take is a fine thing, some writers tend to forget that effective communication is promoted by a healthy sense of civility in their comments. And that this is your bloghouse and we're all just guests here.

They can always go to tvspy and post an idiotic comment.

To The Whiners:

Does the Oregonian, Willamette Week, New York Times, Tribune or any other publisher print all the responses they receive to an article? It's called editing. If you want to post rude, crude, and senseless drivel then get your own blog, turn on the comments, and wait until your ox gets gored online. He who runs the blog is responsible for the blog, not the folks who don't realize that free speach comes with responsibility. Free speach does not mean you can say anything you desire without repercussions.

I face the same issue in my blog though not to the extent that you do. There are always a few people that have to disagree with everything I say and it gets old after a while. I have never deleted a post, though I have made an attempt to mediate them; frequently my readers step in for me. Lately I have found myself allowing a certian amount of comments and then just turning them off when I get tired of dealing with it. This issue has been a tough one for me.

I've been reading for a while and enjoy the site. Thanks for your efforts. They are appreciated.

On the topic of moderation, be firm and consistant. You will never make everybody happy, but you can keep things sane. The decisions you make today on comment removal will set expectations. If these expectations are inconsistant, you will end up having to manage them. Better to simply decide how you want things to go today and move forward from there.

There is no poster or comment that is more important than the blog itself. Should something fall inside the rules that actually matters, you have choices. The comment can be re-posted, with edits, to preserve it's elements that contribute to the discussion while still honoring whatever moderation rules you believe should apply.

It's your blog and you are not accountable to anyone but yourself in these things.

Why not institute a grammar-based comment censorship system?

You do your best to write well-reasoned, civil posts using good grammar. Insist your commenters do the same.

Any comments without good capitalization, spelling, and punctuation will get deleted for hurting the site's overall readability.

In short -- any views are fine, as long as they're coherent.

Hey, PDXmediawatcher, I'm glad you're not all down on yourself because the world hasn't changed yet. I really think it's too early to start affecting news coverage or the management thereof, in any case.
