Anchors (Follow Up)

As I read the posts about Portland anchors (and yes, they don't hold a candle to Mr. Jennings, RIP), some people suggested that Lars was the best local anchor in recent memory. As a friend once told me, there are no more anchors, just lures.

I would suggest the following and have some questions:

Lars was a great reporter before he became an anchor before he became a card-carrying member of the Talking Points crowd.

Mike Donahue was/is the best anchor to calm Portland during a major crisis (Mt. Hood tragedy - Mt St Helens 1980.

Tracy Barry and Kathy Smith were/are the best female anchors to front newscasts in Portland.

Steve Dunn is the best current anchor doing M-F.

Pete Ferryman/Kim Maus are the best morning team, ever, in Portland.

I don't know Richard Ross (although I heard he was Mr. Rose Festival).

What did Shirley Hancock bring to KOIN - and did her lawsuit help female anchors in the market?

Who among the newbies are stepping up to the plate?

Not sure I understand the waxing poetic over the past few days regarding anchors, anchor teams and the like. Network news is the antiquated vestige of a time before satellite and video technology, when we needed information from central news source to overcome challenges of time and space and technology to reach Americans and provide them with important information. Network news, with its early evening air times, is useless to anyone in the working class, still earning a living or on their way home from doing so when the show hits the air. (Not to mention the average length of a VO is 17 seconds -- what the hell can you learn in 17 seconds?!)

Local news... well that's even more tragic. As a refugee from local and network news production in four states, I've had the "honor" of working with many of the anchor teams raved about on this website. I left to go to grad school, and since then I've realized that the vast majority of on-air "talent" are, frankly, pretty stupid. They read the AP in the newsroom, maybe read their local newspaper, rarely anything else, and think they're smart enough to educate the viewers about anything and everything. Oh, please!

I made a grave mistake in college studying broadcasting instead of learning a subject, like economics, history, English. Based on what comes out of anchors mouths when there's no script, it's clear there's nothing of any consequence in their heads. Color me snobby, arrogant or cynical, but I figured out in my late 20s that what was great about working in news -- that I had the opportunity to learn something new everyday -- also meant that I really didn't know much. Now that I've remedied that, I'm acutely aware of the blather spewing from the mouths of talking heads.

There are more problems in local news than can be solved, and not solved by me, here, in an anonymous blog. There are good people who work in the industry, but the steadfast rule of news is that local newsrooms at full staff are just manned by a skeleton crew. Local news is nothing more than chasing fires and ambulances. Please don't blame the Almighty Dollar for this. The profit motive will save the industry not kill it. The problem is the shortsightedness of management. Owners and managers have forgotten that the best way to make a profit is to build a better mouse trap, not chip away at the quality of the product.

Huh? "Mike Donahue was/is the best anchor to calm Portland during a major crisis (Mt. Hood tragedy - Mt St Helens 1980.)" Come on -- it's been 25 years. I'm sure that it was stellar anchoring during the tragedy, but an entire career and viewership based on a few hours at a desk more than a generation ago? Enough already.

If you want literal calm during a storm, the best illustration would be Jack Capell's reporting on KGW radio during the Columbus Day Storm of 1962. I know, I know, he wasn't an anchorman - but he became a local legend in no small part from his role that day. With the possible exceptions of Jim Little and Matt Zaffino, nobody in Portland weatherdom holds a candle to Jack Capell.

Who are you people? It's as though you haven't moved on in 20 years! Apparently the "demo" on this board is not the demo most news stations are trying to reach these days. Honestly, you can't come up with anything or anyone who has had anything of value to offer since the early 80's? The state of local news in Portland may not be perfect, but it's certainly not filled with a bunch of talentless, unethical scumbags, as many of you apparently believe. It's as though anyone under the age of 60 doesn't qualify as a legitimate news source for you. Unbelievable.

First of all it is Tracy Barry, not Tracy Berry.

The best anchor team in the last 20 years was Bill Lagatutta with Kathy Smith at KGW, circa mid 80's. Lets also not forget the team of Barry and O'Riley at the duece. I think it was easier to shine back then before the consultants spread their lethal virus throughout the market...can you remember anchor cross talk?

For calm under crisis, no one, but no one, beat Paul Linnman. A pleasure to work with when the news was breaking and the scripts went out the window.

Anybody remember Jim Benneman? Not bad either. Think 1996 flood.

The Ralph Wenge/Richard Ross/Bev Williams days at KGW were a highlight.

Everyone remembers Jeff and Julie, but for my money, Jeff and Steve Dunn were a great pairing.

And for that brief time when Dunn and Marmion did KATU's morning show...not sure it was the "best" -- and sometimes it sure wasn't journalism...but you never knew what might happen next.

So "Anchor A" is better than "Anchor B" and "Anchor C" is better than the other two. What makes one of these folks superior to the others? Is it style, substance or both or something else? I'm interested in how you rate a quality. I'm a print guy, not a broadcast guy. When it comes to television news, I'm as clueless as any other viewer. From where I sit, some anchors are poised and some are annoying but I don't see them as anything more than ringmasters running the circus.

I'm not a big fan of bashing individuals in anonymous public forums like this, so I'll keep my observations positive.

Agree about Lars Larson. I really liked Northwest Reports. Northwest viewers are less informed because that broadcast doesn't exist anymore.

Agree also about Donahue. Many feel he's become obsolete because he doesn't have that shouting, excitable delivery that the industry now insists in an anchor. But during moments where a calming presence was required, Donahue was one of Portland's finest. And he still could be. Also put Paul Linnman there along with him. By the way, I wonder how many people here even remember the Mt. Hood tragedy? Hint: OES, May 1986.

About Tracy Barry and Kathy Smith, I think Shirley Hancock belongs with them. Shirley had a motherly warmth to her that her competitors lacked... it was great in certain situations, but perhaps hurtful in others.

Agree 100% about Steve Dunn. He is the finest Portland anchor ever to have such a small viewership. If KATU could overcome its significant other liabilities, then Steve Dunn could really become a star. But as of now, KATU's weaknesses overpower his strength.

Also agree 100% about Pete & Kim (and company) at FOX 12 Good Day Oregon. The best on-air chemistry I've seen in this market ever.

As for newbies, it's a tough call. How can you tell if someone will be a Portland household name in the future? Some may have potential, but they need to be willing to stick around for a while. Who will be allowed to grow old on the air in this town? That is a more important factor than talent or ability. But I do have to say that Portland news managers, particularly those at KATU and KOIN, have done a relatively poor job of grooming talent to be future main anchors. Think about it... if the main anchors disappeared tomorrow, could each station's "B" team step up and take over? And for KATU & KOIN, who exactly is the "B" team?

I must agree with anonymous at 11:04pm... the Gianola/Dunn pairing on the KATU 11pm news was a great one. Hendricks/Hancock also worked very well on the KOIN noon news. And while I am quite impressed with Joe Donlon, KGW would have a tremendous anchor strength today had Jim Benneman stayed at KGW alongside Tracy Barry.

I hate to admit it, but I did admire Lars Larson as a reporter and anchor during the 1990s -- before he became a fat head. (Seriously, what's up with conservative talk guys gaining weight?)

Ageless Mike Donohue was always too wholesome to receive news from.

Steve Dunn is probably one of the best. He seems overdue to breakout of the Portland market.

I've watched news since that late 80s and I have know idea who Pete Ferryman/Kim Maus are.

As a geeky news kid in the 80s, I grew-up watching Richard Ross. He was grandpa-ish and had that great 1950s authoritative news delivery style.

I honestly can't think of any newsbies who stand out. Frankly, news anchors seem obsoletely since they often only provide poorly edited versions of news I've already read online. To remain relevant, news anchors are going to have to be more opinionated and entertaining.

There's a lot more news sources out there since the early 80s. There's also a lot more broadcast stations since the early 80s. Therefore, the audience is segmented like never before.
With all the bashing and complaining about media sources these days, it's surprising anyone anywhere wants to get into it. Today's radio stations (think Charlie FM) could be done on an MP3 player hooked up to a transmitter, I wonder how much longer before TV becomes Windows Media Player on full screen mode hooked up to a transmitter? It makes one wonder if the point of all of this is to stifle different voices and opinions out there, and move all media and news to a government-controlled and approved format.
While I'm at it, I'll end this post by mentioning: anyone remember the cable access guy, Jeff Pelham I believe, that said Lars sits in a high chair, and also followed around Ray Watson and Craig Cheetham who both were part of KOINs news crew at the time one day at Waterfront Park?
And how about Clyde Lewis of Ground Zero Radio? It might not be a news show, but its definitely a different viewpoint on things that's completely ignored by most media.

I like the comments about the "B" team. Who are the next teams? I don't see anyone waiting in the wings at any stations. Beyond the main front line talent - they're weak. Having worked in several big and small markets, the talent here is not that impressive. I know these news directors must have a lot to choose from... but come on. Everyone here is old school. No one the younger crowd can relate to. I'm not saying hire a 20 something to sit on the desk, but some "fresh" faces might be good to be waiting in the wings.

KGW - I think Steph Strickland could be next in line to move up. Is that good or bad? Not sure.

KATU - I hope they have more than Anna Song. Not main line ready by any means. And PLEASE not that Susan Harding.

KPTV - Hilary? NO WAY! But is there anyone else there? Who would they pick?

KOIN - All their anchors shouldn't be on the desk as it is. From morning to night. As for anyone waiting in the wings, no one. That's scary!

I think if Steph Strickland was really the heir apparent, KGW wouldn't have hired a new weekend anchor from out of town instead of promoting her. I imagine Steph is not happy about that, we'll see how the viewers take to the new kid on the block.
In general, Portland's second tier anchor teams (on weekends) are young, inexperienced and hard to watch.
KPTV's morning team is top notch, and so is KGW's. The others don't even compete.
The next in line anchor benches in Portland are extremely weak.

Instead of writing this I should probably get back to bed since I'm home sick and not at work, but I felt compelled to respond. I appreciate the free exchange that anonymity gives people, but personally believe this blog works best when it focuses on the content issues facing local news journalists. There's a reason I don't read TVSpy or Medialine anymore and I hope this blog doesn't follow that same path.

Please don't assume that because I'm not the new weekend anchor I'm somehow unhappy. I gave some thought to applying for the position and ultimately decided not to for some very important personal reasons.

First, my family. In my previous two jobs and when I first started at KGW I worked weekends. I missed a lot of family camping trips, bbq's, and gatherings. While I still work weekends from time to time and still miss some important holidays, I generally have my weekends to spend as I see fit—with my family.

Second, my beat. I enjoy covering health stories. They challenge me. I learn something every day and every so often I get to do a story that I'm deeply proud of. Sure, I have to turn pieces on gimmicks and fad diets and other stories that I'm not as enthusiastic about. I don't make the final decision about what I cover (which is not to say I'm always right when I disagree about the story assigned to me). But overall, I couldn't ask for a better beat. I get to do some print work, help out organizations like the Komen Foundation and others, and I try to do the best, most accurate job I can on a daily basis. If I switched to any other schedule I would likely go back to general assignment reporting and lose all of that. I haven't covered a pervert or psychopath story in a long, long time.

And finally, my future. I don't know what KGW has planned for me long term, nor do I worry about it. I do know I like and sincerely respect the majority of people I work with and work for. I also know television news is a fickle beast. What works today may not work tomorrow. Rod could take a job elsewhere and the new news director may think I'm the worst thing he/she has ever seen on the air or may hate the idea of having beat reporters. It's subjective. So, if I'm suddenly not "fresh" enough, or heaven forbid "too old"... I'll just take my wrinkly face and the wisdom that comes with age and go find another journalism job in town. But for now, my life is great and I plan to enjoy exactly what I'm doing for as long as KGW will let me.

Nojam75 writes: "I did admire Lars Larson as a reporter and anchor during the 1990s -- before he became a fat head."

Leaving the characterization aside, I don't recall that there was such a time. I worked at OPB in 1993 when Lars decided to take it on during its transition from state ownership to non-profit status. He came in having decided what the story was, engaged in one of his one-sided rants with CEO Maynard Orme until Maynard lost his cool, then aired the reaction.

When he learned that the legislature was going to take a vote before his NW Report story could air, he sent messages to members asking them to delay the vote until they had had a chance to see his report. He also failed to disclose a personal issue that may have been the real bone he had to pick with them.

In the process of getting even, he not only lost his objectivity, he missed the story. I subsequently learned this was SOP when Lars got exorcised about something.

So when, exactly, did the transition to which Nojam75 refers occur? (I've only been in the market since 1991, so I may be missing some history here.)

Back in his reporter days, Lars used to put on a veneer of objectivity, I suppose, and once upon a time we were proud of him. You see, I went to school with Lars and we at thought it was great that a Tillamook boy made what we thought was the big time after growing up here and working as a disk jockey at KTIL. But frankly, Lars was an honest-to-goodness school yard bully even when young, and that old Lars had to rear its ugly head sooner or later.

I remember one day at Lars' cousin's house - Tom Spivey - where Lars came toward me seemingly out of nowhere, fists clenched, fuming. He was going to beat me up because he "heard" somewhere that I said something bad about him. As he charged toward me, he slipped on a wet patch of grass, fell and hurt himself. While he lay on the grass moaning, I had a chance to say that I barely even knew who he was and so of course I couldn't have said anything bad about him. But that was Lars, as we all saw later - always going off half cocked, full of anger but lacking even an ounce of forethought or introspection.

Ah the memories.

I don't see a lot to be excited about with the current crop of haircuts, but if you haven't seen Hilary Hutchinson lately then you don't know how much she's really blossomed. I think she has great potential and has only recently turned the magic corner. Kelley Day has a lot of camera presense and charm but still comes across to me as a bit dim-witted. Sorry. Maybe she should get genuinely interested in current events and start learning about the real world. It might help because she has half of the needed tools to be a star. The team doesn't work, though.

The timbre of her voice is grating. Easily could be remedied with some coaching to train her to use her voice more effectively. Jack Penning is another. Talented and reliable but his voice needs some polishing. Does this stuff matter? Yes. Watch the big networks- all of their talent know how to use their main instrument and use it well.

By accepting their position, anchors become vulnerable to public opinion. That opinion can be expressed through the phone, in person, or through the internet... and by identifiable people or anonymous ones.

Some argue that critiquing talent on this board is inappropriate. I disagree. As an on-air "talent", I accept that there are those who don't find me talented, attractive, or valuable. That's the way it goes. If that's too uncomfortable, then I'm not fit for this job.

So I say bring on the kudos and the criticism. But realize that most of us are smart enough to recognize the difference between real criticism, personal opinion, and cheap shots.

Having said of all this, I think Joey Donlon is the best male anchor in town, hands down. Smooth, clean delivery. Never tries to be melodramatic, engages in funny cross-talk every now and then and, most importantly, he's believeable. Anchors serve as a sort of bridge to connect viewers between the stories within each newscast, and Joe is the most solid span in town.

All this is why she has NOT HAD A TV JOB OFFER in all of America since she left KOIN. Not one!

Frankly as a long time viewer for YEARS, I would say I really could care less about what happens off camera. Shirley was enjoyable to watch and was able to deliver the news with a degree of professionalism while not looking like an exotic dancer.

As a longtime viewer of Shirley Hancock (my mother always watched KOIN) I found her dense. Her crosstalk was inane, her pained expressions just that...painful. At the same time, I would take her over Kelley Day. Not sure why my mother kept watching KOIN all those years, she must have really liked to yell "oh, you stupid woman" every night (she wasn't a huge Mike Donahue fan either, but considered him sincere). I think she just found Julie Emery so intolerable she stuck with the dumb that she knew.

As a viewer, I appreciate KGW's approach to news. They take the high road. And I believe it's rewarded in the ratings. Others should take note.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion here about the producers behind the news. Aren't they the real drivers of what has aired?
